We do hope you have found something of interest from our wall clock range. |
Here at The Curio Shop we run many lines including Baby Toys from The Manhattan Toy
Company, old terracotta pots, celtic jewellery (our next dedicated site), and
any number of other novelty lines. It has to be said however that despatching
wall clock orders always gives us particular pleasure. Although the packaging
of the large wall clocks can be something of a challenge, just handling these quality
items is a real pleasure. The quality of this range never ceases to impress
us. From the original Old Rusty Cogger, (We found this clock even before we
were retailing clocks ourselves - we bought it as a present for a relative. It
still takes pride of place on lovely old rustic brick wall in a Warwickshire cottage;
the former home of the author of the song 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary'
and so aptly named 'Tipperary Cottage'. Years on, it still is a stunning
large wall clock, keeping perfect time. Our relative can't even remember changing
the battery!) through to the more modern retro themed wall clocks that have
been added to our range in more recent years. One of those great coincidences
in life was when we received our very first order from our Old English Clock Collection
site within a matter of hours of it being put online. It came from our
relative's business partner who had long admired the Rusty Cogger hanging in
Tipperary Cottage and searched the web to obtain one. God bless you Google! And
thanks again Mr Bates. It's nice to see the despatch address and try and picture the home that the clock is bound for. Will it maybe be hanging alongside one of our old maps from our sister company The Old Map Company? Interestingly, the first minute hand for a wall clock was invented in 1577, by one Jost Burgi. This invention was created for Tycho Brahe an astronomer of the period who needed it to assist with his star gazing activities. A device to make clocks more accurate - the pendulum was created later in 1656, (the period of our old maps range,) by Christian Huygens. Continuing on the historical theme the word clock comes from the French "cloche" which translates to a bell. The Latin word for bell is glocio, the German is 'glocke' and the Saxon 'clugga'. Standard time was invented in 1778 by Sir Sanford Fleming. Did you know that the invention of the alarm clock occurred in Ancient Greece around 250 BC ? The Greeks built a water clock in which the rising waters would both keep time and eventually hit a mechanical device that triggered a signal! The first alarm clock to ring was produced by Seth E Thomas in the 1800's. So where are our wall clocks bound for? Perhaps in an old Tudor cottage or could it be bound for a modern warehouse apartment? Or perhaps, as a chrome kitchen accessory for someone's brand new kitchen. We really want a large wall clock for our own home but they are selling so quickly there never seems to be one spare for us. The only one we have actually ever managed to purloin for ourselves is a small convex cream desk clock that sits in our TV room. It has to be said it is indeed entirely functional as well as decorative. Again it's a perfect timekeeper due to the modern quartz movement as well as an object de art. Lately we've seen a huge interest in our station clock range particularly from the USA. Because of the size and weight of some of the wall clocks the shipping charge is often astronomical (around the £50.00 mark) but these overseas customers almost invariably agree to the extra charge, probably because they will be in receipt of something often unique within their own country. This brings to mind a lovely clock we shipped to Hong Kong recently. Whilst the very weight of the item accounts for some of the cost the packaging of course has to be effective when the piece is travelling thousands of miles to its final destination. Rest assured we take this side of the operation very seriously. It's not so much of a problem for UK orders as we have a fixed price contract with Parcleforce UK so we are generally able to enclose your wall clock in an over-sized box for complete safety in transit. Air mail orders however are a challenge (by the way fastest overseas shipping times are to Euro countries - UK - DE - FR - NL - BE - LU - CH - NO - SE - DK and IE ) which have a standard carriage rate of £10 the rest of the world being set at £15.00 in the cart area. Please note however that these only apply to the smaller wall clocks - surcharges ARE applicable to most other items destined outside the UK as we mentioned previously and throughout the site. For full clarification of these charges and please see our full terms and conditions. If you need any further advice on choosing your wall clock we are always here on 0870 901 1610 - please don't hesitate to call for more information or to check availability. Don't forget our generous return policy - if you are less than delighted with your purchase or find the same piece at a lower price, then return it within seven days of receipt for a refund.
